Prior to MAR taking over the contract in September 2016, Stevenage Borough Council managed their security services in-house. MAR was asked to consider an outsourced approach in order to improve overall standards across several buildings and as part of a wider service requirement, which also included commercial cleaning.
MAR’s brief was to review all aspects of the current service provision – everything from staff recruitment and retention policies, through to management information and reporting requirements.
Our first step was to carry out a detailed audit of current operations, including interviews with existing staff, job shadowing and an assessment of future council requirements. We were firmly of the belief that until we had a complete understanding of the current position, future recommendations would not be credible.
After transferring existing staff via the TUPE process, we then carried out 4-6 weeks of extensive analysis. From this, we developed a detailed plan of action to remedy all of the known challenges across this multi-site operation.
This included an improved staff training programme, implementation of a new robust recruitment process and the introduction of regular management review meetings.
These initiatives resulted in the appointment of a new supervisor to oversee all sites, supported by a team of motivated and diligent security guards.
We are proud of our positive on-going relationship with the council which continues to go from strength to strength.
