Ruskin College is an independent educational institution in the heart of Oxford. The college specialises in providing educational opportunities for adults with few qualifications and comprises an original building that dates back to the late 1800s, and a new modern wing completed in 2012.
Due to the school having various old and new building types, a variety of cleaning techniques needed to be considered to ensure that the college was always presented in a first class condition.
Before taking over this contract, the cleaning service at the College was part in-house and part out-sourced to another contractor. This resulted in very poor standards, a considerable drain on the college’s management resources, with little or no cover provided for periods of absence.
Upon taking over this contract, we restructured the entire approach to the cleaning process. This included increasing the length of hours provided to a smaller number of cleaners, slightly increasing rates of pay and introducing retention and performance related incentives – both financial and non-financial.
We also engaged with local staff to provide additional cover and worked hard to improve overall levels of motivation amongst all of the staff.
As a result of these changes, all cover issues were resolved, reliability levels have massively improved, the college management has been freed up to focus on more business critical issues and overall standards have dramatically improved.
In addition, after close liaison with the College, we have since introduced our specialist, eco-friendly range of cleaning products throughout the site. These very much support the College’s values and ambitions to reduce their overall carbon footprint.
The client is now very happy with all aspects of the cleaning services that we provide and more than satisfied with the changes that we have implemented whilst working with the College.
We now provide daily cleaning services across all buildings on the campus. This includes offices, the main library, lecture theatres, classrooms, student/staff restaurant and kitchens and student accommodation consisting of 86 bedrooms.
